Important Eight Branch Chandelier in Polished Brass with Foliate and Geometric Decor by Gio Ponti
Gio Ponti (1891 – 1979)
An important and exquisitely rendered chandelier in mirror-polished brass by Gio Ponti and Emilio Lancia, with a refined and purified tiered foliate decor, eight serpentine arms tapering to fine curved points, and angular floret-shaped bobeches and finials anchored by a series of sleek disks and eggs. The chandelier’s geometric and foliate elements, pared down to their essence, counterbalance each other to create a design of great lightness and presence, a beautiful example of Ponti’s effortless marriage of modern and traditional tropes.
