Paul Evans Monumental Sculpted Bronze and Glass Coffee Table, Signed, 1974

$21,500

Paul Evans (1931–1987)

An exceptional, sculptural Brutalist coffee table by American Craft Movement leader Paul Evans, in bronze. The architectural base, comprised of textural interlocking facets vigorously hand sculpted with delicately contrasting motifs, rises like a spectral, labyrinthine cityscape. It holds aloft a rectangular 3/4 thick inch glass top.

This powerful piece is the product of an innovative technique Evans developed to create massive works of imbricated bronze slabs that remained light enough to juxtapose, strikingly, like Jenga blocks. A thick impasto of bronze resin was cold-sprayed onto the carved wood substructure and then intricately molded and sculpted by hand. Unlike many of the lines Evans designed for Directional which were produced en masse, these hand-wrought bronze tables were created in a limited quantity. The result is equal parts functional object and work of art.

Signed “PE” and dated “74.”

Evans’ Sculpted Bronze collection, equal parts functional object and work of art, is the product of an innovative technique

gave his works the look of cast bronze while enabling them to retain their lightness, expanding the freedom of design and possibilities of production.

“Sculptured Metal Collection,” for which he employed an innovative application of epoxy and bronze over wood and steel frames to create unusual pieces that are as much works of art as they are functional objects. The process Evans perfected gave his works the look of cast bronze while enabling them to retain their lightness, expanding the freedom of design and possibilities of production. The sculpted steel frame consisting of interlocking sculpted steel legs is decorated with bronze star and swirl motifs.

In 1968, Paul Evans created a new line for Directional Furniture called the “Sculptured Metal Collection,” for which he employed an innovative application of epoxy and bronze over wood and steel frames to create unusual pieces that are as much works of art as they are functional objects. The process Evans perfected gave his works the look of cast bronze while enabling them to retain their lightness, expanding the freedom of design and possibilities of production. The sculpted steel frame consisting of interlocking sculpted steel legs is decorated with bronze star and swirl motifs.

A sculpted bronze and glass “Stalagmite” coffee table, the thick round glass top sits on top of a bronze base, decorated with thick impasto like application of bronze over an iron framework. A magnificent example of Paul Evans’ sculptural work – a culmination of his artistic and technical skills.

You are viewing a signed (PE70) dining table in exceptional condition from 1970. We believe it is one of the finest examples of this dining table on 1st Dibs or available anywhere. There are no chips, scratches, gouges or any imperfections that we can observe. The surface of the table is expected to be if you were to order it new, straight from the Directional Showroom. You will understand when you place this dining table in your home, why Paul Evans executed this skyscraper design. When the natural sunlight shines on the towering base blocks at different times of the day, you can see an ever changing facade of the color of bronze. It goes from a deep dark bronze on one side to darker bronze on the other. We tried to capture this effect on camera, please see all the photos. Fritz and Hollander seeks out the best examples for your presentation. This piece was obtained from a collector of fine taste in New York. The base only: 65-inches wide x 25-inches depth x 29-inches high. See full dimensions with glass in this listing. The glass is 3/4-inches thick.

A fantastic sculpted bronze coffee table by Paul Evans for Directional, circa 1973, signed and dated. The table belongs to the sculpted bronze series, one of the most desirable series by Paul Evans that was inspired by the skyline in New York City. In the “Brutalist” taste, the bronze resin was cold sprayed on the constructed wood blocks and further sculpted by hand. Signature PE and production year 73 were sculpted on the bronzed surface. The base itself is 15.5 x 47 x 29 and it currently support a glass top of 36 by 54 but a larger glass can be used if desired.

This exceptional coffee table by Paul Evans was a custom order and is the largest we’ve ever seen of his sculpted bronze series. The architectural base, an arrangement of heavily textured slabs in a beautiful composition, reminds us of a city skyline. This piece represents brutalist design at it’s finest.
