Gio Ponti: A Monumental Executive Desk in Reeded Mahogany and Brass, Italy 1950’s
Gio Ponti (1891-1979)
A rare and important executive desk by Gio Ponti, in dramatically carved and reeded walnut with polished brass details. Impeccably crafted, starkly geometric in composition, and imposing in size, this significant work by Italy’s foremost midcentury architect features beautifully reeded sides, stepped like an upside down ziggurat; a reeded prismatic back with a sharply angled base, raised on angled and tapered legs; and two smooth banks of three drawers each, with one long horizontal drawer in the center, accentuated by dimensional disk-shaped handles in polished brass. The desk’s angled and stepped shape and three-dimensional grooved carving, a distinctive decorative feature Ponti first introduced in his pieces of the 1930’s, is here updated in an angular, modernist plissé which wraps around the entire desk and continues even on its inward-facing flanks.
Italy, 1950’s.
