Pedro Friedeberg Exceptional Surrealist Carved Clock, Giltwood, Mexico 1970s
Pedro Friedeberg (b. 1937)
An exceptional, dreamlike Astroclock sculpture by Mexican Surrealist master Pedro Friedeberg, in carved and gold-leafed mahogany enriched by striking painted overlay — a rare addition for the artist. Twelve fantastical, carved gilt hands for the hours (a humorous take on the “hands” of a clock) radiate from a gilt face adorned with fine geometric sunbursts; one burst encircles the letters “EJ,” the initials of the patron to whom the artist gifted this special commission. With a second row of five spirited hands gracefully supporting astrological symbols. The whole rests on sinuous gilt and red ground legs culminating in Friedeberg’s trademark elongated feet.
A unique piece.
